And it’s up to Emmy Clifton to uncover the truth…
My review
The Secrets We Hide is the second installment in Karin Slaughter’s North Falls series. I’m a longtime fan of Slaughter’s work, so I was excited to curl up with this one over the weekend. While the writing delivers the quality I’ve come to expect from her, the story itself took a different direction than I was hoping for.
One of Slaughter’s strengths is balancing compelling character development with a taut, engaging investigation. Unfortunately, this installment leans much more heavily into family drama, grief, and emotional trauma than the gripping police work I’ve come to expect. The result felt more like a family drama with a murder mystery woven in than a true crime thriller.
I really enjoyed the first book in this series, so I had high hopes for this one. Unfortunately, I struggled with Emmy, whom I found increasingly annoying and difficult to connect with. That made it harder to invest in the story, and the recurring emotional themes sometimes felt overly melodramatic.
The Secrets We Hide is my least favorite Slaughter novel so far. Perhaps she’s taking the North Falls series in a different direction, with more emphasis on the emotional toll of investigations. If so, it may simply come down to personal preference, as this approach didn’t quite work for me. Not every book can be a favorite, even when it’s written by an author you admire! I’m not ready to give up on this series just yet. I’ll definitely pick up the next installment before deciding whether North Falls is for me.
My recommendation: an OK read.
