Synopsis
Simon and Vicky couldn’t seem more a wealthy Chicago couple with a stable, if unexciting, marriage. But with these two… absolutely nothing is what it seems. When a beautiful socialite is found hanging in a mansion in a nearby suburb, Simon and Vicky’s complex web of secrets begins to unravel. A whirlwind affair. A twenty-million-dollar trust fund about to come due. A decades-long grudge and an obsession with revenge. Both Vicky and Simon are liars–but just who exactly is conning who? Prepare to question everything you think you know in this wickedly clever novel of greed, revenge, obsession–and quite possibly the perfect murder.
My review
The psychological thriller, Look Closer, is the first book I’ve read by David Ellis. It was a wickedly entertaining read! The story is packed with unreliable, scheming, and backstabbing characters, all caught in a web of deceit. Ellis’s sharp writing and cleverly executed twists, paired with scandalous moments, made for an wild journey right to the very end!
The novel starts off a bit slow, but don’t be fooled—it quickly transforms into a juicy, devious, scandalous ride about a third of the way in and never loses momentum. Trust me, it’s worth getting invested! With unexpected twists, jaw-dropping moments, and plenty of “What the heck?!” surprises, you’re in for an absolute blast!
The novel follows the complex lives of Simon and Vicky, whose seemingly perfect marriage hides dark secrets and a labyrinth of deception. Ellis skillfully unfolds their story through alternating perspectives and timelines, ensuring that just when you think you’ve figured things out, a new twist throws everything off course. This narrative approach not only keeps the suspense high but also adds depth to the characters, making their motives and actions even more compelling.
Look Closer is a clever, highly entertaining novel. With its blend of suspense, intrigue, and morally grey characters this book was an absolute page-turner. Ellis has a knack for storytelling, and I can’t wait to dive into more of his work to see what other surprises he has in store!
My recommendation: read it!
