Perfect Prey – DI Callanach Series Book #2
Author: Helen Fields
Genre: Thriller, Crime Fiction
451 pages
Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers, 2017
Synopsis
Perfect Prey by Helen Fields is the second book in the DI Callanach series, following Callanach as he faces a new and disturbing case in Edinburgh, Scotland.
In the middle of a rock festival, a charity worker is sliced across the stomach. He dies minutes later. In a crowd of thousands, no one saw his attacker.
The following week, the body of a primary school teacher is found in a dumpster in an Edinburgh alley, strangled with her own woollen scarf.
D.I. Ava Turner and D.I. Luc Callanach have no leads and no motive – until around the city, graffitied on buildings, words appear describing each victim.
It’s only when they realise the words are being written before rather than after the murders, that they understand the killer is announcing his next victim…and the more innocent the better.
Perfect Prey is a gripping and suspenseful thriller that delves into the darkest depths of human nature. With its compelling plot, well-drawn characters, and chilling atmosphere, it is a worthy successor to Perfect Remains and will keep readers on the edge of their seats until the very end.
My review
Perfect Prey by Helen Fields is a thrilling continuation of the DI Callanach series that captivated me just as much as the first book. The author once again delivers a gripping story with complex characters, a dark and atmospheric setting, and plenty of twists and turns to keep readers on the edge of their seats.
One of the strengths of Perfect Prey is the way it delves deeper into the characters of Callanach and Turner. We see Callanach grappling with the aftermath of the previous case and struggling to come to terms with his own past. This added depth to his character made him even more compelling, and I found myself becoming even more invested in his story.
The plot of Perfect Prey is fast-paced and filled with suspense. The investigation into the series of attacks is intricately plotted, with the tension building steadily as Callanach and Turner race against time to catch the perpetrator. The twists and turns kept me guessing, and I was completely engrossed in the story and the developing relationship between Callanach and Turner. The ending was my favorite part – it was action-packed, thriller and threw in a few shocking twists.
Overall, Perfect Prey, with its overarching storyline and multiple subplots, is a superb thriller that delivers on all fronts. With believable and relatable characters, a complex plot, and atmospheric setting, it is a must-read for fans of British crime fiction. I highly recommend it and can’t wait to read the next installment in the series.
My recommendation: read it!
