My review
As a fan of crime fiction and thrillers, I thoroughly enjoyed Dead Ground by M.W. Craven. The novel is the fourth installment in the Washington Poe series, and it did not disappoint. Craven’s writing is sharp and evocative, drawing the reader into the atmospheric setting of the Lake District and creating a sense of unease that lingers throughout the book.
One of the strongest aspects of the novel is its characters. Detective Sergeant Washington Poe is a compelling protagonist, with a complex backstory and a strong sense of justice. His dynamic with his colleague, Tilly Bradshaw, is also a highlight of the book. Tilly is a brilliant but socially awkward character who provides a unique perspective on the case and adds a touch of humor to the story.
The plot of Dead Ground is gripping and full of twists and turns that kept me guessing until the very end. Craven does an excellent job of building suspense and creating a sense of urgency as Poe and Tilly race against time to catch the killer. The resolution of the case is satisfying and ties up all the loose ends neatly. As the investigation unfolds, Craven expertly weaves together multiple plot threads, keeping the reader guessing until the very end. The pacing is relentless, with twists and turns around every corner that kept me on the edge of my seat. And just when I thought I had it all figured out, Craven threw in a curveball that left me reeling.
Overall, Dead Ground is a fantastic read that will appeal to fans of crime fiction and thrillers. Craven’s writing is top-notch, and the story is engaging from start to finish. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a gripping and suspenseful read!
