Synopsis
The Stone Sky is the third and final book in N.K. Jemisin’s Broken Earth trilogy, concluding the epic story of a world plagued by catastrophic seismic events known as Fifth Seasons. The novel continues to follow the stories of Essun and her daughter Nassun, both powerful orogenes with the ability to manipulate thermal and kinetic energy. Essun is still searching for a way to save the world from the ongoing Season, while Nassun has embraced her powers and seeks to bring about a cataclysmic event that will reshape the planet.
As Essun and Nassun’s paths draw closer together, the novel delves deeper into the history and lore of the Stillness, revealing the true nature of the obelisks and their connection to the planet’s turbulent geology.
Meanwhile, the narrative also follows the story of Hoa, a stone eater who has taken on human form and serves as a guide to both Essun and Nassun. Through Hoa’s perspective, the reader learns more about the history of the Stillness and the events that led to its current state of turmoil.
As the novel builds towards its climax, Essun and Nassun are forced to confront their own beliefs and desires, as well as the consequences of their actions. The fate of the Stillness hangs in the balance, and the characters must make difficult choices that will determine the future of their world.
In a gripping and emotional conclusion, the true power of the orogenes and the planet itself is revealed, leading to a final showdown that will change the course of history forever. The Stone Sky is a masterful conclusion to the Broken Earth trilogy, with its richly developed world, complex characters, and thought-provoking themes. Jemisin’s storytelling is powerful and evocative, leaving a lasting impression on the reader long after the final page is turned.
My review
The Stone Sky is a stunning conclusion to the Broken Earth trilogy that left me in awe of the author’s complex storytelling and world-building abilities. Jemisin’s ability to craft a richly imagined world, populated by complex characters and steeped in thought-provoking themes, is nothing short of extraordinary.
One of the aspects of the novel that I found most compelling is Jemisin’s exploration of power, identity, and the impact of trauma. Through the characters of Essun and Nassun, who are both powerful orogenes struggling to navigate their roles in a world that fears and marginalizes them, Jemisin delves deep into the complexities of power dynamics and the ways in which trauma can shape and define us. The relationship between mother and daughter is particularly poignant, as both women grapple with their own desires and beliefs, ultimately coming to a deeper understanding of themselves and each other.
The world-building in this trilogy is truly exceptional and I became emersed much faster than I expected. Jemisin’s depiction of the Stillness, a world ravaged by catastrophic seismic events and ruled by a rigid caste system, is vivid and immersive. The concept of the obelisks and their connection to the planet’s geology adds an intriguing layer to the narrative, highlighting the interconnectedness of all living things.
I was also struck by Jemisin’s prose, which is lyrical and evocative, drawing the reader into the story with its beauty and depth. Her ability to create a sense of atmosphere is unparalleled, making the world of The Stone Sky feel alive and vibrant.
The Stone Sky is a masterpiece and has one of the best series endings I’ve read in recent years. It is a deeply moving and intellectually stimulating read that will stay with me for a long time. I cannot recommend it highly enough to anyone looking for a truly immersive and unforgettable reading experience.
My recommendation: read it! Jemisin’s writing is more lyrical than typical science fiction novels so stick with it. You’ll be glad you did.
