Synopsis
The Fifth to Die by J.D. Barker is the second book in the 4MK thriller series, following Detective Sam Porter as he continues to hunt down the elusive Four Monkey Killer (4MK). The story picks up where the first book left off, with Porter still reeling from the events of the previous investigation and the revelation of the killer’s true identity.
As Porter delves deeper into the case, he discovers that the 4MK may not have been working alone, and that there may be more killers out there emulating his methods. To complicate matters, Porter is also dealing with personal demons and struggles, including the fallout from his previous investigation and the toll it took on his mental health.
Similar to the The Fourth Monkey, the narrative is interspersed with diary entries from the killer’s past, providing insight into his twisted mind and the events that led him to become the 4MK. These entries also hint at a larger conspiracy at play, with other individuals involved in the killings.
As the body count rises and the pressure mounts, Porter and his team uncover shocking secrets and hidden motives that lead them to question everything they thought they knew about the Four Monkey Killer case. The lines between past and present blur as they race against time to stop the killer before it’s too late.
In a gripping climax, Porter comes face to face with the true mastermind behind the killings, leading to a shocking revelation that changes everything. With its dark and twisted plot, complex characters, and shocking twists, The Fifth to Die is a thrilling and suspenseful read that will keep readers guessing until the very end.
My review
The Fifth to Die by J.D. Barker is a complex and intense sequel to The Fourth Monkey that delivers on all fronts. Continuing the story of Detective Sam Porter and his pursuit of a serial killer, this novel was a rollercoaster ride from start to finish and was impossible to put down. The gruesome details and dark subject matter that create the chilling and haunting atmosphere aren’t for the faint of heart.
One of the aspects of The Fifth to Die that I found most compelling was the development of the characters, particularly Porter. Despite his flaws and inner demons, Porter remains a deeply relatable and sympathetic protagonist, and I found myself rooting for him as he navigated the complexities of the case. The interactions between Porter and his team, especially with Detective Clair Norton, added depth to the story and kept me invested in their journey.
The intricate plot is expertly crafted, with plenty of twists and turns that kept me guessing and second-guessing until the very end. Barker’s skillful storytelling kept me on the edge of my seat, eager to uncover the truth behind the 4MK killer. The pacing of the novel is relentless, with twists and turns that weren’t gimmicky or expected. Barker seamlessly weaves together multiple narrative threads and keeps the tension high from start to finish.
I also appreciated the way Barker delved into the psychology of the killer, exploring the motives and methods behind the crimes in a way that felt both chilling and compelling.
Overall, The Fifth to Die is a masterfully written thriller that delivers on all fronts. With its gripping plot, complex characters, and heart-pounding psychological suspense, this novel is a must-read for fans of crime fiction. Barker has once again proven himself to be a master storyteller, and I eagerly anticipate the next installment in this captivating series.
Don’t miss the last book in the series – The Sixth Wicked Child.
My recommendation: run to read this book! This is not a standalone series so make sure you read The Fourth Monkey prior to this one.
