Synopsis
The Redbreast by Jo Nesbø, the third book in the Detective Harry Hole series, is a complex and gripping thriller that intertwines two storylines. In one, Detective Harry Hole of the Oslo Crime Squad investigates a rare gun found on a suspected assassin, leading him to uncover a plot involving neo-Nazis and wartime collaborators. In the other, set during World War II, a Norwegian soldier finds himself on the Eastern Front, where he makes a fateful decision that will have repercussions decades later. As Hole delves deeper into the case, he uncovers a web of betrayal, revenge, and political intrigue that spans generations and threatens to reveal dark secrets that powerful people will do anything to keep hidden. With its complex characters, intricate plot twists, and atmospheric setting, The Redbreast keeps readers on the edge of their seats until the very end.
My review
I was excited to read my first novel in the Harry Hole series and The Redbreast far exceeded my expectations! The Redbreast is a compelling and intricately crafted novel that kept me hooked from start to finish. Nesbø’s writing style is engaging, and he does a masterful job weaving together multiple storylines that span different time periods and characters. The character development, particularly of protagonist Harry Hole, is superb, and I found myself emotionally invested in his journey.
One of the aspects of the book that I enjoyed the most was the way Nesbø blends historical events with the contemporary narrative. The exploration of Norway’s role in World War II and its impact on the present day added depth and richness to the story.
Overall, I highly recommend The Redbreast to fans of crime fiction or Nordic Noir and anyone looking for a gripping and intelligent read. Nesbø’s storytelling is top-notch, and I can’t wait to dive into more of his work.
My recommendation: One of the best books I read in 2023 – read it! There are two previous books in the Harry Hole series but I recommend you start with The Redbreast.
